Rampant sand-mining

It has been reported that sand mining has become rampant on the banks of river Yamuna. Unofficial figures suggest that unsustainable mining in these areas is helping mining companies earn up to two billion rupees annually. Such sand mining in the Yamuna is damaging crops, say farmers. There is a sand mafia operating in the region, claim villagers. They say that there is a connection between local authorities and mining contractors. Farmers in this region are the worst affected as the crops are not able to get nutrition from the soil. There is no official monitoring technology and illegal sand mining keeps happening. Farmers also say that the natural course of the river has changed because of mining.
